The Polestar O₂
"Polestar O₂ is an electric roadster concept that reclassifies the sports car. No roof, no noise, no fumes. " - Polestar
With the Polestar precept going into production as the Polestar 5, Polestar has dropped another electric vehicle concept on our heads. The Polestar O₂, the electric roadster concept, doesn’t just exist to create desire. The existence of the O₂ is to show that there’s a new paradigm when it comes to sports cars. One that proves that the premium choice, the fun choice, and the sustainable choice are the same.
A drop-top sports car concept intended to be the best EV the company might develop. The name o2 signifies oxygen, symbolizing the electric vehicles’ connection to the air we breathe. In fact, being an electric vehicle, not contributing to pollution, and being a convertible complement a driver’s connection to the air we breathe making the O₂ the perfect name for this electric vehicle. In an industry focused on the production of electric SUVs and Crossovers. The Polestar O₂ is very much in a league of its own.
Based on the same platform as the Precept the O₂ is just as beautiful to look at. A bonded aluminium unibody. A mono-material interior. Polestar O₂ takes the design language set with Polestar Precept even further, creating an all-new premium performance paradigm as an all-electric roadster. A unique concept that merges art with technology. The overall design of the electric vehicle is minimalist and sleek like a lot of the previous polestar models.
The front features Polestars signature headlights that we saw with the precept. Significantly larger space between the bottom and top lights perhaps symbolizes Polestar and Volvo stepping in their own directions of design and innovation. Most of the front of the vehicle is smooth, apart from gaps on either side contributing to the car's overall aerodynamic efficiency. A pinstripe on the lower edge runs along the whole circumference of the car.
From the side, the vehicle is undoubtedly one of the most attractive EVs we have seen. When in place the metal folding hard top has an incredibly sleek almost vertical sloping roof. The C Pillar of this electric vehicle hosts a LED charging meter perfectly incorporated into the sloping roof.
The back of the vehicle keeps up the sleek minimalistic design throughout the vehicle. The Rear lights, like the precept, feature a thin LED blade along the entire width of the car. The LED lights go down vertically along the car’s side to help minimize drag.
Polestar has always shown that they are very big on sustainability; the O₂ is a testament to that. In many vehicles, you will tend to find materials like leather, plastic, and wool bonded together to create interiors. However, Polestar has opted to use thermoplastic mono materials for all their soft touch components making it more recyclable than other cars. In fact, Polestar intends to have all their cars carbon neutral by the year 2030.
The Polestar O₂ is a 2+2 (car body style) meaning you have two full-size seats at the front and two smaller seats at the back intended for people who are either children or smaller individuals. However, the Polestar O₂ has a long wheelbase so the front can move far forward allowing leaving leg room for taller passengers in the back. A smooth flat dashboard, flat top and bottom sporty steering wheel, floating arm rest and a floating centre console all tie together creating a very sleek interior design. As seen in the precept the Polestar O₂ has cameras for side-view mirrors that are connected to a screen on the inside of the vehicle.
Polestar claims the O₂ could come with an integrated drone. Push a button on the google powered infotainment system and the drone could deploy and take pictures and videos of your surroundings as you drive. Once it completes the flight it could land and allow you to edit the footage and post to social media using the infotainment system.
